Vlassenbroek

Vlassenbroek c David Samyn

The picturesque artists’ village of Vlassenbroek is tucked away in a green meander of the Scheldt. You might easily miss it if the slender spire of the Gothic Saint Gertrude’s Church did not rise above the Scheldt dike. The landscape of the Vlassenbroek polder has been shaped by the sigma plan, which aims to reduce the risk of flooding. The flood plain is 300 hectares of nature, rich with creeks, freshwater ditches and marshes. It is brimming with animal and plant life too. Just listen to the songs of the birds as they dart across the grasslands. The art you see on the way provides an extra touch. The artwork Tidal Secrets #1 by landscape artist Will Beckers invites you to take a moment to contemplate the beauty of this area. And that is not difficult to do!
