Polders of Kruibeke

Polders Kruibeke Arcade Kruibeke c Bart Van Leuven

This is the largest flood plain in Flanders, but it is only really flooded on a few occasions each year. Just enough to conjure up a world of natural beauty. With mudflats and salt marshes, swampy alder forests, thousands of meadow and water birds, roe deer, beavers and otters. If you cycle to this little paradise from the village of Bazel, you will come to a dike with a very special entrance gate. The zigzagging arches made of rust-brown corten steel are a landscape artwork by artist duo Gijs Van Vaerenbergh. In Bazel itself, be sure to stop off at Wissekerke Castle. Originally built in the 12th century, today it is a neo-Gothic moated castle that acts as a time machine as it takes you back to the world of the 19th-century nobility.
