Pallox

Fruitbeeldig Hageland Pallox 8 Lander Loeckx

This is quite an unusual watchtower in the rolling Hoegaard landscape. The tower appears to be built from oversized fruit crates - known as ‘palloxes’. From the top, you look out over the fruit orchards that in spring transform into a stunning display of delicate white and pink blossoms. The strange names etched into the rust-brown corten steel walls? These are names of varieties of apples and pears. The artwork is an ode to fruit cultivation in the Hageland. Fruit growers also used to build towers of palloxes in their fruit orchards. They used them as a lookout, to outwit inspectors checking for workers being paid under the table.
