Church of the Assumption of our Lady Damme

The most beautiful view of the polders? For that, you have to climb the 206 steps of the Church of the Assumption of our Lady in Damme. From the summit of this distinctive flat-topped tower, you have a breathtaking view over the polder scenery, the Damme Canal, and the 17th-century city ramparts. The robust church tower has been a beacon in the flat landscape since 1210-1225. The tower was also once crowned with a spire. But when the Geuzen captured and plundered the city in 1578, its downfall began. In 1727, part of the church was torn down again, including the tower. But admit it, that flat top also has its charm!
