Menin Gate

IEPER Menenpoort Jan D Hondt Ateljé D

Goosebumps! Every evening, the buglers of the Last Post Association sound out the ‘Last Post’ in a moving commemoration of all those who fell in World War I. They have been doing so under the Menin Gate in Ypres since 1928. The gate was built by the British in 1927 for the approximately 54,900 British soldiers killed in World War I who were never identified or found. Their names are chiselled into the walls. Out of respect for the deceased, there is never any applause after the Last Post. The silence under the Menin Gate is deafening. The monument is currently undergoing restoration ahead of its 100th anniversary in 2027.
