Meerdaal Forest

The Meerdaal Forest is a real fairytale forest, with a thousand ancient oaks - some 300 years old! - stately avenues and deeply etched forest paths. You cycle past reception zone De Torenvalk. If you climb the wooden watchtower, you immediately see just how big the forest really is. Together with the Heverlee Woods and Egenhoven Woods, the Meerdaal Forest forms the largest mixed deciduous forest in Flanders, a green lung occupying 2050 hectares. And barely three kilometres from the Grote Markt in Leuven. Expect some special encounters, such as with gentle bears and modern-day neanderthals. They are the work of tree artist Ad Wouters, who has created complete fantasy worlds out of dead tree trunks.
