Marktplein Maaseik

Marktplein Maaseik c Jonathan Ramael

A double row of linden trees lines the lovely main square of Maaseik, the culture-rich jewel in the string of Meuse villages. Beneath that canopy, the inviting terraces call out. Perfect for a pit stop with a glass of local Meuse wine. Those two gentlemen on the cobblestones in the middle of the square? They are the brothers Jan and Hubert van Eyck, the painters of the world-famous Adoration of the Mystic Lamb, who were born here in the 14th century. Had the local delicacy of ‘knapkoek’ brittle cookies been available then, they would surely have enjoyed them. You can get this regional speciality from any bakery in the town.
