Kalkense Meersen

Veer Schellebelle c Brecht Sonck

No houses to be seen, no matter how far you look. And no disturbing noise either, only the wind and thousands of meadow birds seeking refuge away from human inhabitation. The Kalkense Meersen constitute a valuable piece of nature covering no fewer than 950 hectares. One of the last sanctuaries in East Flanders, it is criss-crossed with beautiful, lonely cycle routes. The tranquillity of the area owes itself to the Scheldt, which interacts with the land here as a carefully managed flood plain. It produces a majestic interplay of gusting wind, blissful silence and washing water. The ferry across the Scheldt takes you there.
