Hoge Blekker

At 33 metres high, Hoge Blekker is the tallest dune on the entire Flemish coast. Literally an eye-catcher, the dune was a favourite beacon for sailors who even from afar could see its white crest gleaming - or ‘blekken’ in the local lingo. Which immediately explains how it got its name. The dune lies at the centre of an 18-hectare nature area, which even enjoys European protection. Interesting fact: the Hoge Blekker has travelled quite a distance over the years. As a drifting parabola dune, it has been shifted eastwards by the wind. A walking dune, you might say!
