The Yser estuary

It is a cordial meeting of fresh and salt water, where the Yser flows into the sea. By the way, it is the only river that does that in Belgium. The wide river estuary comprises 130 hectares of special nature featuring mudflats, salt marshes, beaches, dunes and polders. Each mudflat is a bountiful table for millions of creatures such as worms, crustaceans and small snails. These, in turn, are on the menu for the coastal and mudflat birds and graceful waders. The fish attract cormorants and seals. And then you have salt-loving plant life such as salicornia, sea plantain and sea lavender. A unique nature spot teeming with life in Flanders.
