C-Mine

The two impressive pithead towers signal the location of the former Winterslag mine from afar. It all began in 1901, when a certain André Dumont discovered coal in the ground beneath Genk. It was not until 1988 that the mine finally closed. Today, the site has been transformed into C-mine, a vibrant hotspot for artistic talent where there is always something to discover and where you can almost literally dig into that rich mining past. Go on a C-mine Expedition, wander through old tunnels and top it all off by climbing the 60-metre-high pithead frame. The highest in the country, by the way! The beautifully restored energy building is the beating heart of C-mine. In the central square under the pithead frames, you can get lost in an impressive steel labyrinth.
