Albert Canal in Kanne

Albertkanaal Kanne c Koen De Langhe

They look impressive, the high marlstone walls on both sides of the Albert Canal in Kanne. The grey walls screen off the rest of the world so that all that remains is the broad canal, the unhurried inland water traffic and perhaps a few cyclists. A wonderfully tranquil waterfront spot, unmatched in Flanders. Carving the trajectory of the new canal out of the soft chalk of the Caestert Plateau in 1930 was quite a feat. Between the villages of Kanne and Ternaaien, the labourers had to dig to a depth of sixty metres. An elegant white bridge connects the banks of the canal. That bridge, 120 metres long, was officially opened in 2004 as Flanders’ first suspension bridge.
